Observation Narrative
Mesic Mixed Hardwood Forest on steep slope of a ravine around Wormley Pond. This area was selected to sample because of the large trees and the relatively high herbaceous cover compared to the surrounding forest which is mostly without or with very sparse herbaceous cover. Sample site has more wind disturbance than the surrounding forest. Eroded areas on slope have high cover of Luzula and there are abundant woody seedlings, particularly Quercus alba. Microstegium forms patches in surrounding forest and exotic species are effecting the edges of this sample. There are several dead Oxydendrum in the stand. The flats above the ravine support a successional Loblolly-Tulip Poplar Forest.
0 - 2 cm loose leaf litter with organic root mat (exposed mineral soil in some areas on slope)
2 - 5 cm medium brown sandy clay
5+ cm reddish orange clay loam
